Similar in structure and function to Shin-Etsu’s KBE-903, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, the three hydrolyzable methoxy groups of KBM-903 are slightly more reactive than the three ethoxy groups of KBE-903. As such, this product may lead to improved interaction between the inorganic and organic components of some systems. If a longer shelf life or another aspect of increased hydrolytic stability is critical to a given application, KBE-903 may be more suitable. In most applications, this product is an appropriate replacement for KBE-903 and has the added benefit of lower weight loss upon hydrolysis. view less

The reactivity and compatibility of this polyfunctional alkoxysilane product makes it an ideal candidate to improve the properties of many different materials. For example, KBM-974 signif icantly improves the flexural and tensile strengths of glass fiber composites, especially in applications involving long-term exposure to water and high humidity. KBM-974 improves the chemical bonding between inorganic fillers and organic resins and the adhesion of composites and organic polymers to inorganic surfaces. Diluted solutions of KBM-974 are useful primers for bonding organic materials to inorganic surfaces. Similar to other silane coupling agents, formulations containing KBM-974 often demonstrate better processing characteristics. KBM-974 is an especially effective coupling agent and dispersing aid in thermoset composites such as epoxies, unsaturated polyesters, and polyimides, and works well in mineral-filled thermoplastics such as polypropylene, polybutyleneterephthalate, PVC, nylons, and polycarbonates.
