Anise is a dried, light-brown, oval-shaped seed of a plant in the parsley family. This product has an unmistakable licorice-like flavor. It originates from China, Egypt, Spain, or Turkey. Anise can be used in a wide variety of regional and ethnic desserts, including black jelly beans, British aniseed balls, Austrian and Dutch dishes, German Pfeffernuesse and Springerle, and Peruvian picarones. This product is taken as a digestive after Indian meals and is a constituent of Mexican drinking chocolate. Anise is available either as the whole seed or as a ground powder.
