AEROTEX® NMALF combines the cost effectiveness of AEROTEX® NMA with a dramatic reduction in total formaldehyde. The active self-crosslinking species of AEROTEX® NMA-LF is N-methylolacrylamide (NMA). NMA contains both a vinyl group and an N-methylol group. The vinyl group is reactive and enables the NMA to be readily incorporated into a variety of polymer backbones. Once incorporated into the polymer, the methylol group can be triggered to undergo crosslinking with itself, other functional groups in the polymer (such as hydroxyls or amines), or with cellulosic substrates. The bifunctional feature of AEROTEX® NMA-LF ultimately results in latex binders which provide important performance properties to the final product, such as wet strength, tear strength, and solvent resistance. view less

The neopentyl structure of this trifunctional compound, having two primary hydroxyl groups and one tertiary carboxylic group, permits simplified processing by allowing the combining of all reactants in a single kettle charge. Good control of the reaction is possible due to the slower esterification rate of the tertiary carboxyl, assuring a uniform distribution of carboxyl groups along the resin backbone.
