It is a highly specific and effective inhibitor of photosynthesis which can control fouling of marine surfaces caused by algae. Its very low solubility in water contributes to very slow leaching rates and therefore extended antifouling action. This product is a white to slightly yellow powder. Combined with its low solubility in water, this makes it ideally suited to prevent the growth of algae in long-life marine antifouling applications. Fouling can significantly increase water resistance to boats which can result in up to 40% higher fuel consumption. Fouling can also decrease maneuverability (a safety hazard) and it can damage the ship’s body. In the process of fouling, algae form a substrate for macrofouling. While Irgarol® 1051 shows outstanding performance in the control of algae, it has comparatively low biological activity to animals in general, including fish, shellfish, and humans.
