Croda, a global specialty chemical company, has welcomed the news that zinc oxide (ZnO) has now been approved for use as a UV filter in cosmetics in Europe. Following a vote by member states in the EU Commission Working Group on Cosmetics in October last year, zinc oxide in both its nano and non-nano forms has now been added to Annex VI of the EU Cosmetics Regulation.
Helene Hine, Marketing Manager, said: “The formal approval of new options to achieve effective UVA and UVB protection is a major milestone for formulators of UV protection products. Having a wider choice of globally approved filters enables brands to meet consumer needs more easily.”
“Croda firmly believe in the value of mineral UV filters and are pleased with this recent development and the opportunities it opens up for both our customers and ultimately the end consumer” continues Helene Hine.
Croda offers a range of zinc oxide dispersions under their Solaveil Clarus brand, Solaveil CZ-100 and Solaveil CZ-300. A tightly controlled particle size distribution ensures these provide true transparency on the skin whilst maintaining excellent UV protection. With different carrier oils available for formulation versatility, these mild dispersion systems are very easy to use in a wide range of personal care applications.
