Ordinarily, oil and water don't mix. But with the help of some formulating tips, you can do just that. In this presentation, you will learn:
- the most common type of clear, oil-in-water dispersions
- which oils are easier to solubilize into water
- starting solubilizing ratios for specific formulations
- what can help reduce the amount of solubilizer needed
- How Ostwald Ripening can impact formulations
- personal care expert George Deckner's solubilizer recommendations

Thanks , I have an issue with clarity on Hair Styling Gel formulation, after the addition of fragrance. I have to try with your recomded option of using solubiliser. Let me work on that and revert back. Formulation is having Water, Carbopol and Acrylates polymer and fragrance.
Another green solubiliser from SEPPIC is ORAMIX CG110. Also, for green non-polar solution to counter ostwald ripening, one could consider an EMOGREEN grade.
dear sir,
we want to formulate a water based air freshener with oil based fragrance, is that possible?? our main problem is when we add defoamer /antifoam we get few white particles which do not dissolve in the mixture.pl suggest
thanks
It is possible to formulate a clear fragrance in water based air freshener. Typical defoamers contain dimethicone and silca which will not form a clear dispersion.
Hi
I’m formulating a dish wash formula that has LAS + SLES + 1% DEA before adding the fragance I mix the fragance and the DEA and then incorporate them in the solution. All goes well until I leave a sample in an air conditioner room and the formula tends to turn turbid. When I move the sample back to room temperature it will clear again.
Any suggestions ? Can it be the fragance ? Can I add Emulgin slm 20 to the fragance and then to the formula ?
Thanks and best regards.
Jose
Solubilizing the fragrance with a good solubilizing agent should solve your problem, You need to use 3 parts solubilizier to 1 part fragrance. See my article for recommended solubilizers.
Do you have a suggestion of a green cold-process solubilizer for a light liquidy serum blending xanthan-thickened aloe gel with 20-25% carrier oils? We want to move away from Polysorbate 20 as it is not clean enough for our customers and to minimize foaming.
You need to use an emulsifier not a solubilizer. Try using 2% Dracorin GOC from Symrise. Also homogenizer the oil into the water phase.
