Recorded Wednesday, October 10th – Presented by BASF Care Creations
Palm oil sourcing has provided a challenging opportunity for its uses. Demand for this versatile oil has skyrocketed in recent years. According to a Statista report, domestic palm kernel oil consumption in the U.S. amounted to approximately 417 thousand metric tons in 2017, up from 116 thousand in 2000. Palm kernel oil can be found in nearly half of all common consumer products, from cookies to shampoo. While it is one of the most productive oils, its cultivation can create environmental and social issues.
BASF, like its customers, recognizes its responsibility to improve the palm oil industry. We have committed to fostering sustainable palm by procuring all oils only from RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certified sources by 2020 and expand our oil commitments to significant intermediates based on palm oil and palm kernel oil as RSPO certified by 2025. In addition, we leverage our global network to ensure that our production sites globally are RSPO certified.
As part of its strategy, BASF in its initiative ‘Time for Change’ will therefore start to offer its palm-based personal care specialties exclusively as RSPO certified sustainable, according to the Mass Balance supply chain model.
With this approach, we aim to provide our customers the ability to meet their palm oil sustainability commitments to their customers, consumers and stakeholders.
Join BASF to explore the challenges of the palm oil industry and to learn how BASF can help you with your own commitments to sustainable formulations of palm oil derivatives.
BASF offers many RSPO-certified palm oil-derived ingredients, including surfactants like and Plantapon® LGC Sorb, emollients like Cetiol® Ultimate, Cetiol® RLF, and Myritol® 331, pearlizers like Euperlan® PK 3000 AM, and lipid layer enhancers such as Lamesoft® PO 65.
