Lactobacillus Acidophilus, or "acid-loving milk bacterium," is a homofermentative species which ferments sugars into lactic acid. It grows readily at rather low pH values, as well as at the average human body temperature. It occurs naturally in the human and animal gastrointestinal tract, mouth, and vagina. These strains are commercially used in many dairy products, and some yogurts.
