Basics Of Friction

When two surfaces, round or flat, are in contact and one is moving, we recognize that friction is preventing smooth and easy movement, that we may wish to squirt a bit of lubricant onto one surface to reduce the friction, and that one or both surfaces may show wear tracks after some time has passed. When engineers change the design of a shaft and bearing, the friction may be reduced and the bearing may show less wear.
