HET-CAM (Hen's Egg Test - Chorioallantoic Membrane Test Method) ECVAM-INVITTOX Nº 96, ICCVAM 2010

The general intention of this assay is to assess the acute irritation potential of a test substance to mucous membranes in the analogy to the Draize Eye Irritation Test. For this purpose, a defined dose of the test substance is applied to the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of fertilized and incubated hen’s eggs.

The CAM is a complete tissue containing arteries, veins and capillaries, and is technically easy to study. It responds to injury with an inflammatory process similar to what one would observe in the conjunctival tissue of a rabbit’s eye. Its well- developed vascularization provides an ideal model for ocular irritation studies.
