Diethylene glycol dibutyl ether is an inert, aprotic solvent. It has wide applicability in various types of cleaning formulations. Examples include grease, wax, and stain removers and special low-flammability non-aqueous cleaning systems for electronic equipment. DEGDBE is used as a solvent for several coatings applications. It is a good coalescing agent with coupling ability. However, it has limited solubility in water. DPGDME has no hydroxyl functionality. It is an inert, aprotic solvent and can be used in proton sensitive systems. Dipropylene Glycol Dimethyl Ether is not listed as a Hazardous Air Pollutant, has low toxicity, and offers an alternative to solvents being phased out as a result of the Clean Air Act. Due to its chemical stability and the absence of reactive groups, DPGDME can also be used as an inert reaction medium, e. g. for reactions with alkali and alkaline-earth metals (Grignard reactions), polymerizations etc. Dipropylene Glycol Dimethyl Ether is used in solvent-based coatings and water-based polyurethane/ isocyanate coating systems.
