News Drill Down
- Craft – A move toward beverages that have not been mass produced has made craft beverages a hot trend for 2016. According to Food Business News, “craft suggests small batch and authentic, often using local, natural ingredients.”
- Portion Control – Instead of removing sugar from beverage formulations, some companies are downsizing their cans and bottles, explains a recent article from Business Insider. “In 2014, the American Beverage Association pledged to cut calories by 20% by 2025,” and smaller containers is one strategy for accomplishing this goal. A big benefit for beverage companies is making a bigger profit off of less product.
- Ready-to-Drink Teas – Ready to drink tea manufacturers are savoring double digit growth, as are flavored sparkling waters, coconut water, kombuchas and more, according to Food Navigator.
- Healthy Fats? – FoodBev’s recent article presenting “Canadean’s food and drink trends for 2016” flags fat as an ingredient that has done a 180 when it comes to perceptions of healthfulness. But what’s fat got to do with beverages? The article cites a functional water beverage recently launched in the United states that “contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) derived from coconut oil.”
